Marc Johnson, former Superintendent of Sanger Unified School District and a highly respected educational consultant, will once again open this year’s Summer Learning Institute in Morro Bay with his dynamic and inspiring presentation. Known for his ability to ignite passion and purpose in educators, Marc will not only deliver his trademark message of encouragement and dedication to student success but will also delve deeper into the transformative power of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). He will explore how collaboration and working together as a cohesive team provide the most effective framework for ensuring student learning and achievement. Marc’s session promises to set the tone for a powerful and impactful learning experience.

Expulsion Hearings – Ensuring Due Process and Protecting the Rights of Students When students are recommended for expulsion, it is often the responsibility of the site administrator to present the case before the Administrative Panel or Governing Board. The quasi-judicial nature of the expulsion hearing process requires that administrators have at least a basic understanding of the required components of presenting a case, including understanding the burden of proof, how to introduce evidence, and how to question witnesses. This training session provides school administrators with a clear understanding of the expulsion hearing process, from creating the expulsion packet through drafting appropriate findings of fact and conclusions of law.

The Power of Talking Circles in Supporting Student Attendance Fusion Charter School proposes a dynamic workshop at the upcoming PSC Summer Learning Conference, focusing on the transformative practice of talking circles. Our session will highlight how this traditional method fosters open communication and deepens connections among educators, enabling us to collaboratively address challenges such as student attendance. Participants will engage in a guided roleplay of a talking circle, specifically aimed at brainstorming strategies to support students with poor attendance. This interactive format not only promotes active listening but also empowers educators to share insights and develop collective solutions. By the end of the session, attendees will understand the structure and benefits of talking circles, and they will leave equipped with practical tools to implement this approach in their own classrooms. Join us to explore how talking circles can enhance our support for all students and strengthen our school community!

This session will help administrators understand the fundamentals about responding to requests for special education and student records, California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests, requests for information, and more.  Get practical pointers about how to identify and process these requests, plus a brief overview of risks and common mistakes to avoid.

This session, led by Dr. David Diehl, Director of Student and Community Services at Selma Unified School District, delves into the complexities of drug abuse in schools. Drawing from Dr. Diehl's extensive background in both law enforcement and education, participants will gain insights into various categories of drugs, understand the signs and symptoms of drug use, and explore practical intervention strategies. The session will focus on building a tiered approach to prevention and treatment, highlighting the importance of ongoing education for students, staff, and families. Attendees will leave with resources and tools to foster a safer and more informed school environment.
